It's A Wonderful Life [1946]

It's A Wonderful Life [1946]

Forget the caricature, this film involves disappointment, loss, failure and at one point even shows a man on the edge of suicide.

It sketches out the life of one man- a normal man, an unimportant man, whose actions facilitate the success of other men, whose kindness enables other men and women to thrive, and ultimately he is rewarded for those acts of kindness with love and respect. It is unusual in that the film is quite dark- the man who does all this is left fairly bereft for a lot of the film, we see his sacrafice at its most poignant- though we also see how it has brought him the love of a woman- we see him think that there is no point to his life lived for others. The film also offers no punishment but significantly no redemption either (unlike Dickens's scrooge) for the hero's alterego who lives merely for himself. It in some sense has a similar theme to Ingmar Bergman's Wild Strawberries- a film I'd reccomend having watched this- that no man can afford to be an Island and that it is better to live with and for others than onesself. This is a classic as other commentators have said but not just because its a feelgood film, its a feelgood film which is aware of the darker sides to life.

Harold And Maude [1971]

Harold And Maude [1971]

This is my favourite film of all time and I'd recommend it to anyone. Life affirming, poignant, moving - altogether fabulous. I've just bought this dvd to replace the video version which I no longer have the technology to play. There's no way I could be without a copy of this film, it makes the greyest day a little brighter.

The Adventures Of Robin Hood [1938]

The Adventures Of Robin Hood [1938]

just watched the blu ray version of this classic movie, and i must say for most part it looks positively stunning! considering its age it puts many modern films to shame! and with plenty of extras to keep most movie fans happy its a great example of what can be done with the extra space that blu ray discs have to offer.Th Adventures of Robin Hood [Blu-ray] [1938] [US Import] oh just to confirm the disc came from america and is region free playing without any problems on my playstation 3.

Harry Hill - Birdstrike Tour [1997]

Just, erm, fantastic really. I've not actually seen the video but the live show was superb...and you'll never be able to explain to people why... Still don't get the Sild obsession though..

Pearl Harbor [2001]

Pearl Harbor [2001]

Pearl Harbour was a defining moment in the history of world. Clearly the producers thought that wasn't exciting enough, so they had to introduce a love story! The point being ... what? To tug at the heart-strings? It was a REAL event, and people were being shot, bombed and torpedoed! Is that not emotional enough? Are we only supposed to care which guy gets the gal at the end?

The actual attack sequences were so flat that there may as well have been a big flashing sign at the bottom of the screen saying "computer simulation". Yes, I know it's CGI ... but GOOD CGI doesn't LOOK like CGI. When a Harvard dressed up to look like a Zero in Tora! Tora! Tora! is considerably more realistic and believable, you have to wonder if the producers of Pearl Harbour just used CGI for the sake of it.

This dire film isn't entertaining. It's not educational. It is a waste of plastic. What next? "Hiroshima - The Love Story"?

Martin Chuzzlewit [1994]

Martin Chuzzlewit [1994]

I had, until i saw this production of Martin Chuzzlewit by the BBC, never read the book. Being a devout reader of Charles Dickens novels, i don't know how this one escaped me. However, after viewing this superb, outstanding production,i was resolved to read the book. I did! All i can say is that the cast of characters in the production so closely resembled the ones in the book,it was as though Charles Dickens himself was present, overseeing and directing the operation. The characters stepped out of the book before the camera! Remakable! A masterpiece indeed and a triumph for the BBC!

Amelie [2001]

If you are a fan of Bryan Fullers work (Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls, Pushing Daisies) then you will LOVE this movie.

It is so beautiful and rich in colour and a joy to watch.
