This Boy's Life [1993]

This Boy's Life [1993]

De niro is intense as always, hilarious and brilliant at the start as the pathetic dwight courting ellen barkins character, then turning cruel and tough with an ease only someone of de niros talent could achieve.
Di Caprio is nothing less then brilliant as tobias, another great performance(whats eating gilbert grape?) from him.
Well worth a watch to see the type of mental strenght it can take some people to break free.

The Living Daylights [1987]

The Living Daylights [1987]

While many will debate and argue over Timothy Dalton for years to come, in much the same way as over George Lazenby, I going to put my foot out and say Dalton is one of my favorite Bond's, along with Brosnan and Connery. There never really has been a bad Bond actor, but Dalton, I believe is up there with Connery and Pierce and I love The Living Daylights. Dalton was my first 'new' Bond in many ways. I was four when this film was released, and was developing a love for the Bond movies at the time. I had grown up watching the Moore and Connery movies on television and Dalton was the first new actor in the role that I seen, which is why I have special affection for this Bond movie. I love it. Not only do we have a great Bond movie, but it is also a great espionage thriller that eventually turns into the kind of epic Bond adventure we all know and love. The plot involving the double-double cross of a KGB agent defecting to Britain called Georgi played brilliantly by Jeroen Krabbe, and Bond's attempts to find him when he is 'kidnapped' by playing on the trust of his girlfriend, Kara, a beautiful cello player performed magnificently by Maryam D'abo, is enthralling, and the way it leads from the London countryside, to the ferris wheels of Vienna and eventually to Afghanistan is superbly done. The film is mixture of the thriller elements of the Ian Fleming novels and the epic adventure scope of the movies.

As James Bond Timothy Dalton is excellent, a fantastic choice to play the part. His decision to play the part more akin to the novels of Fleming than the humor of Roger Moore is an inspired choice. He is a mixture of the Fleming character and Sean Connery's Bond. While there is a serious nature here (the darker elements would be at the forefront more in the equally brilliant Licence To Kill), there is still room for humor as seen in the car chase ("I've had a few optional extras installed" when talking about the gadgets). Coming off the Moore films, it may have been too soon for a return to the serious roots, but it works well in the long run. The film doesn't feel like some far fetched action film, it feels like a great spy movie with great actors. Adding to this a wonderfully 80's theme tune from A-Ha, a great score from John Barry and a plethora of great baddies as well as some great set pieces (the battle on the runway at the end is great as is Bond's climactic battle with henchman Necros hanging from the back of an airplane).

I love this film a lot. It's dark, yes, although not as dark as the film that was to come, and is still cracking great entertainment. It is a forgotten Bond classic and it is nice that as time has went on, Dalton's movies as the character have remained as great as they were in the late 80's.

Peter Kay: Live At The Top Of The Tower [2000]

Peter Kay: Live At The Top Of The Tower [2000]

This is Peter Kays first live DVD and it's brilliant. I grew up not far from where Peter Kay comes from and I can relate to everything he says, I'll swear he's seen me using Teletext and, yes, I do say t'internet and t'Egypt. My father was just the same as his when it came to food like Garlic ...... Bread! And he used to drag me out of bed at the crack of dawn on holiday. The extras are great too, the interview is quite funny and there's the John Smith's ads as well. If you know anyone northern, you'll love this, even my Australian friends can relate to it. This is much better than the MEN Arena DVD and really is great northern humour.

Home Alone 2 - Lost In New York [1992]

Home Alone 2 - Lost In New York [1992]

Despite Home Alone 1 being an absolute classic, I've always liked this better than the first. There's more of a story, more lovely scenes and more traps. I recommend both Home Alone 1 and 2, and possibly number 3. Enjoy! These are real Christmas treats!

Doctor Who The Edge of Destruction and The Pilot Episode [1963]

Doctor Who The Edge of Destruction and The Pilot Episode [1963]

One of the rarest of the early Doctor Who series, with William Hartnell as the crusty old Doctor, "Edge of Destruction" is entirely based in the Tardis, which has stopped somewhere between worlds and times. The Doctor blames Ian and Barbara, the two teachers who came aboard in search for answers about his granddaughter, Susan, assuming they have committed sabotage in an attempt to return to their own time. They, in turn, in spite of recent shared escapes from Cavemen and Daleks, have no particular reason to trust his sanity. Something is causing one after another of them to act with violent irrationality, and the clock is ticking towards their destruction... This is a claustrophobic two-episode plot in which the series examines closely some of its more beloved assumptions. For example, who, in this situation, is good and who dangerous--the restriction to a single set may have started as an economy measure but virtue is made of necessity.

Also included is the original pilot episode, "An Unearthly Child", with several retakes. --Roz Kaveney

Rodger & Hammerstein's Cinderella

Rodger & Hammerstein's Cinderella

I caught this showing on the Disney Channel a while ago and encouraged my 5 year old daughter to watch it rather than those repetitive children's programmes. She was entranced! The cast of different races is so refreshing and is great to see in a Disney movie (I am black carribean myself). Since then, we check when it's due to come on again and sit down to watch it. The cast has some fantastic singers, including Whitney Houston - one of the best. I'm so glad I can now buy the DVD rather than hoping to see it again on TV. A great family film!

One Foot In The Algarve [1993]

One Foot In The Algarve [1993]

Ok. Well firstly, this movie is quite different to the series that was on television. Although its just as funny, i personally say this is better!
After seeing quite a few of the television series ages and ages ago..then seeing this, i was extremely tempted to buy it. I always find that when they make a movie out of a good comedy thats been on tv,theyre excellent! Well this just couldnt have been better. Literally from the beginning i found that it was hilarious and i couldnt stop laughing at parts...victor maldrew is just so funny in this!
I loved the plot and the storyline..how it was based on victor and is wife going on a vacation of a company of mrs warboys. They all go to Portugal for two weeks. But dont expect the problems and the hastle when they get there.(This is what really makes the movie quite funny in parts) nothing seems to go right for the maldrews on their summer vacation.
Its basically that..wont go too much into the story..but i highly reccomend anyone that loved or loves these actors, to see this because its excellent! I just love movies especially about a vacation, where things hapen to go wrong inbetween. Gives laughs for the whole of the family to see!

The Ladykillers [1955]

The Ladykillers [1955]

"The Ladykillers" has stood up well to the ravages of time and although I have not seen the recent Hollywood remake , I am sure this original is much better. The film is sinister, atmospheric yet humourous; the criminal gang never really appear menacing despite their malevolent intentions towards their elderly landlady ,Mrs Wilberforce, with Alec Guinness playing the leading role as a criminal mastermind who,as part of his cunning plan, deliberately makes the old lady an unwitting accessory to a large robbery. I liked the film primarily because of it's unusual plot, rich characterisation and excellent acting. However the atmospheric locations also help to make "The Ladykillers" a memorable film ,especially Mrs Wilberforce's wonderful subsiding house perched high above a busy railway line. The presence of steam trains in the film is not only central to the plot ,but also helps to create a sense of motion, danger and uncertainty and adds significantly to the charm and attractiveness of this entertaining black comedy.

The Great Race [1965]

The Great Race [1965]

I've always liked this film and thought it a great pity there had been no Region 2 release on DVD.
This cracking tale of dastardly deeds and deceit is a marvellous race to reach the next gag. And there is never long to wait!!
Through a plethora of cultures and engaging social backgrounds, the tale never seems to peak, until the fantastic pie fight.
A well re-mastered film, although the soundtrack did seem to fade in places.
However, top marks.
