The Goons - The Last Goon Show Of All [1972]

The Goons - The Last Goon Show Of All [1972]

The Goon's are a national institution! They, and especially Spike Milligan, were the god fathers of modern comedy and this gives a rare glimpse into how the Goons actually did those mad stories. My advice to any one who want's to buy the Last Goon Show of All is buy the CD. On the CD, you get the entire show, uncut and a bonus documentry. On this video you get a brilliantly funny story marking the end of one the greatest comedy partnerships of all time, cut to shreads for the sake of fitting it onto a tape! It's not as if the cut's are partiulally good ones either! They miss out virtually an entire scene from the start when Ghrythpipe Fin are Moriarty are talking about there life on the Westminster rubbish dump and consequently you miss most of the jokes that start there and flow through the show. There are cut's dotted about all over the place, too numerous to mention here, and it spoils the whole feel of the story.
The reason why I brought the video was because I wanted to see how the Goon's actually worked; obviously being a radio show you never had the opportunity before. It does make for some fasinating viewing, like the way Peter Seller's actually seems to become each character; my curiosity was cured in that way, but it would have been so much better if the show was uncut.
I was very disappointed with this video, not with the Goon's themselves, they can never disappoint, just with how badly this video is made. Maybe they'll release the uncut version on DVD one day, until then, buy the CD, it's uncut, it's hilarious, it's the Goon's at there best! Neddle Nardle Noo!

Doctor Who The Sea Devils [1995] [1963]

Doctor Who The Sea Devils [1995] [1963]

The Sea devils is definitely one of the best jon stories. It has all the right and essential ingredients-good monsters, good acting and great cliff hangers. Jon Pertwee is on fine form as the Doctor, giving a cool and calculating performance as the Doc. And Roger Delgado gives one of his best performances too. Another thing about this story is the great sound track. creepy and modern at the same time. this is one of the few doctor who stories with real menace and tension. great story.

Sweet Charity [1969]

Sweet Charity [1969]

I first watched this film on its cinema release in the U.K. I loved it then and still do today. My tape version has seen better days so I splashed out on the dvd and I am not sorry. (dvd`s in Africa are very expensive compared to the U.K.)Shirley MacLaine is superb and there could not have been a better choice to take the lead role. Supporting actors Stubby Kay, Ricardo Montalban and Sammy Davis Jnr add to the quality of the production and Chita Rivera is brilliant. The dvd offers an alternate ending but I must confess that I have never watched it.

Dances With Wolves [1991]

Dances With Wolves [1991]

Kevin Costner has always been one of those actors you either love or hate, much like the singing and celebrity of Victoria Beckham or Marmite.

It is unfortunate then, that it is these personal feelings which cloud judgement about whether or not to see a film. Because, in a time when the idea of race relations is once again at the forefront of the news, this simple story of a man open to change can tell us a lot.

Lt John Dunbar (Coster) is a civil war hero. Given the choice of outpost as a reward for a selfless act on the battlefield, he picks the furthest place he can find, the prairee. Also known as Indian country.

Far from being the war-mongering madmen his superiors are presented as, Dunbar is a quiet, docile man, eager to learn and thoughtful. He writes a diary, in which he places great importance, and when his Indian neighbours first show up, he is scared but also intrigued.

What follows over the next three hours is a beautiful, poetic story of friendship, love and honour amongst men. Costner, in his directorial debut paints a wonderful canvass, rich in colour and tone. Characters are well fleshed out, and all given a story perhaps worthy of a film of their own. He presents the Indians not as hostile, but as a simple, spirtitual people, oppressed and scared.

Dances With Wolves is a rarity. Its beauty and story have rarely been matched in silver screen history, and despite what may have been said, it is my opinion that its Best Film Oscar was well deserved.

I can't say this clearly enough - see this movie.

Das Boot, The Director's Cut (A Wolfgang Petersen Film)

Das Boot, The Director's Cut (A Wolfgang Petersen Film)

Spread over two discs with no extras and no space wasted, this is an outstanding DVD of an outstanding series, shown here as one long "movie" cut. The optional dubbed English audio track might offend the purists (me included), but bear in mind two things: one, the whole thing was dubbed anyway (in German), because the set was so noisy and two, the entire cast spoke English and dubbed themselves, so it's a LOT better than you might expect, should you find yourself using the English track as a means to get someone to see it! Hopefully it won't come to that...

The Very Best Of It's A Knockout - Here Come The Belgians

The Very Best Of It's A Knockout - Here Come The Belgians

Into my heart an air that kills

From yon far country blows:

What are those blue remembered hills,

What spires, what farms are those?

That is the Land of Lost Content,

I see it shining plain,

The happy highways where I went,

And cannot come again........

Meet Me In St. Louis [1945]

Meet Me In St. Louis [1945]

Garland has a pretty nasty voice by any measure, and the songs themselves set a high standard in banalty.

The awful sweetness of this DVD would make a hardened sailor wretch, but the thing trots along briskly enoough, for which it merits 2, not 1 stars.
