Perhaps i'm biased here but i love this film. Michael Mann may look back at it with horror but it's a great tale of the nazis and the occult. I agree with other comments that this film really does need a dvd release. There is a great cast and an excellent and atmospheric soundtrack by tangerine dream. A troop of nazis take refuge in a romanian keep which holds many secrets. One of them is a supernatural force of evil, molasar, who seeks his freedom and enlists the help of a poorly ian mckellan. Scott glenn, jurgen prochnow and gabriel byrne also star. Some will surely find it all a bit cheesy as the film uses smoke machines and 80's lighting the best it can but i've loved this film for years so it's a 5 star for me.
The Goon's are a national institution! They, and especially Spike Milligan, were the god fathers of modern comedy and this gives a rare glimpse into how the Goons actually did those mad stories. My advice to any one who want's to buy the Last Goon Show of All is buy the CD. On the CD, you get the entire show, uncut and a bonus documentry. On this video you get a brilliantly funny story marking the end of one the greatest comedy partnerships of all time, cut to shreads for the sake of fitting it onto a tape! It's not as if the cut's are partiulally good ones either! They miss out virtually an entire scene from the start when Ghrythpipe Fin are Moriarty are talking about there life on the Westminster rubbish dump and consequently you miss most of the jokes that start there and flow through the show. There are cut's dotted about all over the place, too numerous to mention here, and it spoils the whole feel of the story.
The reason why I brought the video was because I wanted to see how the Goon's actually worked; obviously being a radio show you never had the opportunity before. It does make for some fasinating viewing, like the way Peter Seller's actually seems to become each character; my curiosity was cured in that way, but it would have been so much better if the show was uncut.
I was very disappointed with this video, not with the Goon's themselves, they can never disappoint, just with how badly this video is made. Maybe they'll release the uncut version on DVD one day, until then, buy the CD, it's uncut, it's hilarious, it's the Goon's at there best! Neddle Nardle Noo!
You can take it from me - five stars are not enough when it comes to rating the West Wing. This series is head and shoulders above any other drama on TV. I have all of the DVD's released so far and I am anxiously waiting for Season 5 (By the way - does anyone know when it will be released?)
From the incredible writing to the exceptional performances by the actors, this show is a treat for the senses. It will have you laughing and crying and I promise you it is never dull. Some of the storylines have been almost prophetic and all have been filled with a quality unmatched by any other dramatic series.
If you have never seen this show - buy the DVD anyway. You will not be disappointed!
I first watched this film on its cinema release in the U.K. I loved it then and still do today. My tape version has seen better days so I splashed out on the dvd and I am not sorry. (dvd`s in Africa are very expensive compared to the U.K.)Shirley MacLaine is superb and there could not have been a better choice to take the lead role. Supporting actors Stubby Kay, Ricardo Montalban and Sammy Davis Jnr add to the quality of the production and Chita Rivera is brilliant. The dvd offers an alternate ending but I must confess that I have never watched it.
One of the best political films ever, about the 1954-1957 uprising of Algiers against French colonial rule. As the film shows, the uprising was brutally crushed, but the seeds of independence had already been sown, and in 1960 a new uprising, covering all Algeria, would rise up, and the country would become independent two years later. The French colonists, who numbered more than a million and who had lived in Algeria for more than a century, would be expelled after wards, marking a complete defeat for France. Made in 1965, with financing by the Algerian independent government, it is nevertheless surprisingly fair in some aspects. It shows the brutal terror tactics employed by the FLN (the main Algerian liberation group) like bombing bars and discos used by the Europeans. It also shows the French colonel in charge of suppressing the revolt (played by the only professional actor in the cast) in a quite positive light: in a film without true heroes, he is probably the most sympathetic character, competent and self-effacing, even if he doesn't flinch in using torture to crush the revolt (torture being in his mind the only method to destroy the FLN's cell structure). And, perhaps inadvertently, by showing the terror tactics used by the FLN, it suggests the oppressive, antidemocratic nature of the future independent government of Algeria. Overall, one of the must-see films in every cinephile list (and in any person interested in the politics of the region or in anti terror tactics).
A brilliant show, this DVD is a brilliant investment as these episodes can be watched over and over again. I love it, they make you laugh, they make you cry and you can identify with them so many times. This DVD set along with the others has pride of place on the shelf. This is what motivates me to get the ironing board out and tackle the mountain of clothes, as i know i can stand there and laugh along with these fabulous New York ladies, hey who cares if a few clothes get slightly singed along the way!
Gary Cooper was 40 years old when he made "Sergeant York," and his Southern accent is weak at best, but those things do not end up detracting all that much from his performance or this film. Directed in 1941 by Howard Hawks, "Sergeant York" has strong propagandistic elements. A whiskey-drinking hell-raiser, Alvin C. York undergoes a religious conversation when lighting strikes his gun and almost kills him. His goal in life becomes getting himself a piece of bottom land so he can propose to Gracie Williams (Joan Leslie). Things go against him, but Alvin holds his temper and does what the Good Book tell him to do. Then World War I breaks out and Alvin is drafted. Unable to get status as a conscientious objector because of his religious beliefs, Alvin has to come to terms with the obligations of citizenship versus the dictates of scripture. The film is surprisingly even handed in showing Alvin debating the matter with his superiors. In the end he comes to the only conclusion possible for men of conscience forced to go to war: killing is justified to save lives.
On the Argonne Forest battlefield Alvin, made a corporal because of his marksmanship, becomes a hero when his unit is trapped and he single-handedly kills 25 and captures 132 prisoners. Called the "greatest civilian solider of the war" by General Pershing, York received the Medal of Honor, France's Croix de Guerre, and basically every high medal the Allies could bestow upon him. But while the film does a first-rate job of showing York's heroic exploits, ultimately it is more about the man that the solider. Cooper's sense of dignity is well-suited to the role, which gives more weight to York's life in the hills of Tennessee than to the war in Europe. What he learned back home clearly stands Alvin in good stead on the battlefield.
The supporting cast of "Sergeant York" is truly outstanding, with George Tobias as "Pusher" Ross, Ward Bond as Ike Botkin and Robert Porterfield as Zeb Andrews. Both Walter Brennan as Pastor Rosier Pile and Margaret Wycherly as Mother York received well deserved Oscar nominations in the supporting category. Brennan marvelously underplays his role as Alvin's spiritual leader while Wycherly is simply the anchor for the entire film. Mother York says little and moves slowly, but everything comes out through her eyes. The scene where Alvin finally gets home from the war and sees his mother at the train station is especially touching: his face lights up completely and her "I'm right glad to see you, son" is the equivalent of other people crying and screaming for joy. In addition to Cooper winning his first Oscar as Best Actor, William Holmes receives one for Film Editing. This is one of those movies I never get tired of seeing and it remains the ideal film to watch on Memorial Day.
