The Vital Spark [1988]

The Vital Spark [1988]

I am a collector of Clyde Puffer memorabilia and I found the Video most amusing and typical of these "Wee" boats. When I was an office boy (In 1941) for a glasgow shipping company I had the pleasure of sailing "Doon the water" to Port Glasgow where it was having a re-fit.. she was called the Jennie and is illustrated in Dan Mcdonald's book "The Clyde Puffer" page 33, she was wrecked in the island of Eigg in 1954--- Whilst on Holiday on Pembrokeshire last year I had a Serendipity experience when I found a model 14 inches in length with every detail shown of the vessel in a shop in St.Davids--- I have now purchased The Vital Spark 2 video and again look forward to seeing that. I can thoroughly recommend the Video to anyone who is a fan of this long gone form of transport used to ship goods and chattels to the remote islands of the Inner & Outer Hebrides from up the Clyde--The video is typical of the antics of the crew and a great follow up to the book PARA HANDY by Neil Munro (The Birlinn First Complete edition) which I enjoy reading

The Mousehole Cat [1994]

The Mousehole Cat [1994]

This book is really special. It's elegantly written and illustrated and anyone (of any age) who loves cats, sea tales, Cornwall or star gazey pie should have it on their bookshelves.

The simple prose and lovely pictures evoke the west of England (and it's blue-green sea) so well that I can almost 'ear the sound of the atlantic in the 'arbour.

Beautiful.

The Shout [1978]

The Shout [1978]

A young man Robert Graves(played by a fresh faced Tim Curry), arrives at a cricket match in the grounds of a mental hospital where he is to be the scorer. A doctor(Robert Stephens), introduces him to a man called Crossley, who is to score the match alongside him. Graves then listens as Crossley recounts a tale of how he met a man called Anthony Fielding(John Hurt),who is one of the players on the pitch, and how he became a part of Fielding's life, and from then on the film drifts back and forth from the cricket match to the story Crossley is telling.
This film has a haunting, dreamlike quality to it, and is pretty unique in its approach. Their is no cohesive narrative, and leaves the viewer with as many questions as answers. Thats a good thing in my opinion. The lines between fantasy and reality are constantly blurred, and after watching this your senses will be reeling.
Jerzy Skolimowski directs with great visual flair and Alan Bates is great as the charismatic Crossley.
A real treat. 5 out of 5. The DVD release by Prism has no extras, but the picture and sound quality are excellent, which is especially important in the case of this film

Just Good Friends - Series 1 And 2 [1983]

Just Good Friends - Series 1 And 2 [1983]

Great to see that this is out on dvd and video at last. brilliantly acted by Paul Nicholas and the gorgeous Jan Francis, it has comedy, pathos, wit and some great one liners from a well assembled cast. The excellent John Ringham, under rated and always a super actor with ability of timing and expression, provides a colourful foil for the on/off romance beteween vince and penny. Penny's mother, played by Sylvia Kay,is an actress of acerbic wit and energetic acting. Her monologues with each of the characters provide moments of great mirth and insight. This is a wonderful series, but only 2 of the 3 series are so far available. Watch it for a flavour of the 1980's and enjoy the chemistry of a talented cast. It is the equal of fools and horses, being full of the promise of things to come.Watch out for the barman who later took over Mike's role at the Nag's Head, you can even see elements of Boycie and Marlene in Vincents's father and mother. It is worth every penny(!!) to sit back and enjoy the crafted 14 episodes here. I did!

Kid In The Corner [1999]

Kid In The Corner [1999]

This very strong and touching video gives an insight in the problems of raising a child with ADHD and finding help and understanding in education or health care. It is very informative for those professionally involved with children.

Although not every child with ADHD is the same, behaves like young Danny in this film, it gives a good picture of a life with ADHD. It shows ADHD not only affects the life of the child involved, but affects the entire family life.

Formula 1 World Championship 1999 Official Review : The Champion On The Track

Formula 1 World Championship 1999 Official Review : The Champion On The Track

I expected a lot from this video and I am disappointed : there are a lot of great shots from Pay-per-view TV, but this video is messy ! First you have the race, then highlights of the race, then highlights of the qualifications... I would have prefered a chronological order, and to see all shots at the same moment, not 1 time during the race, then another time after the race...
This video stays quite good, but it could have been really better.
