Wilde [1997]

Wilde [1997]

Everything said by other reviewers about Wilde, Fry and this production are perfectly correct. Wilde has been covered several times in the past and each production tries to portray this complex man according to the standards of the time it is made.

This production is no different. The BBC valiantly steers away from anything remotely genuinely sexual between the men. Which of course is what ruins the film. What is portrayed is largely wrong and the fact that Wilde was mostly involved on a platonic level is never properly developed. Why for example does the BBC always show him fully clothed in bed when his partner is naked? There is a need to dwell on the difference between lust and love between men and this just doesn't happen.

They prefer the viewer to put their own spin on what goes on which, with a topic of this nature is plainly absurd.

They similarly destroyed an otherwise good production on Byron. There's no hint even that the man was one of the great pedophiles of all time. Even the man's death is quickly passed over to avoid having to say what really happened.

Of course male to male sex of any kind is dangerous territory for any film maker but it can be done and of course has been done. One need only recall some of the films shown on Channel 4 to understand this.

So a great production but decidedly unbalanced.

Pop Idol -- A Star is Born

Pop Idol -- A Star is Born

this video is very entertaining, it was a journey from the final ten to to the remaining two. i thought this video was very good and it had a good choice of songs. but i thought gareth and will would talk abit on the video and give us abit more gossip and behind the scenes footage, but it's not like that. if u watched every single show then it's all repeats. I would give this video 4 stars because theirs room for improvement!

The Animals Of Farthing Wood - Part 3 - On To White Deer Park [1992]

I remember watching this at the age of six, and being amazed at how well... amazing it is. Watch out for the bit on the motorway... it's very moving!

The Animals Of Farthing Wood - Part 6 - New Beginnings

The Animals Of Farthing Wood - Part 6 - New Beginnings

This is without a doubt the best of all the videos! A must have for everyone!

The Remains Of The Day [1993]

The Remains Of The Day [1993]

"Remains of the Day" will be regarded as one of the great film masterpieces of the Merchant-Ivory team, now tragically ended with the untimely death, earlier this year, of Ismail Merchant from cancer. Their films were the quintessential cinematic epics respectful of both the settings and characters adapted from both period and contemporary novels, blessed frequently with elegant scripts from their literary partner Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, and of course superb acting from their casts. "Remains of the Day" excels in all of these categories, as a spellbinding, faithful adaptation of the Kazuo Ishiguro novel, with Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson as the star-crossed would-be lovers and servants of the pacifist Nazi sympathizer Lord Darlington (James Fox). Along with elegant acting from both Hopkins and Thompson in two of their finest roles, there is splendid acting too from the likes of James Fox, Christopher Reeve, Ben Chaplin, and a young Hugh Grant as Lord Darlington's godson.

James Ivory's masterful direction takes the audience to and fro between the mid 1930s and the early 1960s, focusing our attention on the chief butler Mr. Stevens (Anthony Hopkins) and the housekeeper Miss Kenton (Emma Thompson), who gradually realize that they are attracted to each other. But alas Stevens, like his master, Lord Darlington, puts his mistaken notions of duty and honor before passion, making a decision he will find himself regretting, albeit for a brief while, years later, when he seeks out Ms. Kenton in a brief, bittersweet reunion for both. Ivory's film is a beautifully realized meditation on unrequited love, which will appeal to fans of Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, and of course Merchant-Ivory films.

Simpsons, The - Sex, Lies And The Simpsons [1990]

Simpsons, The - Sex, Lies And The Simpsons [1990]

Though the cover can be highly offputting, the episodes are nothing like seeing Homer on a chair in his underwear as a slimy slice of pizza drips from his hand.
The Last Temptation Of Homer I'm sure many have seen before. It still makes you laugh to watch it again and again. Seeing Homer drive backwards in to a large tub of water, meeting some rather amusing fish that like to chant "Homer lives Mindy" is just one example of the laughs that come from this episode.
The New Kid On The Block is another classic. Bart has his first crush. Notice how, no matter what number of crushes a Simpson has had in previous episodes, it's always their first in a new one? Watch as Bart takes his first bath, lets Lisa choose dinner for the first time, and says "I fell on my bottom" as a hopeful chat up line. This episode, to put it as the adverts do, will leave you howling with excitement. Waiting for the next to begin.
Bart After Dark is yet another hilarious installment, aren't they all? Watch Lisa and Marge scrub rocks with toothbrushes as Bart watches woman dance infront of men who gape at their revealing clothes in "the witches house". Even the song near the end is really catchy, despite some awful voices (they're okay really).
Lastly, Lisa's Rival. Meet Alison.
Lisa: She's smarter, younger and a better sax player than me. Oh, I feel so average.
Marge really does try her best to solve by telling Lisa she'll always be No.1 to her but Bart has to ruin that by walking by shouting "Hello, first born within earshot!"
Marge: I meant my No.1 girl
(Maggie tugs at Marge's dress)
Marge: Oh brother
This is a must buy video/DVD. There are just two problems. There are not enough episodes and most of them are on the seasons that are out. But for those that want some of the best of the seasons, this is the best for you.

Un Air De Famille [1998]

Un Air De Famille [1998]

This film offers sharp and snappy dialogue, delivered by a handful of superb players, in a dark and confined setting that mirrors the claustrophobic nature of their emotional lives and relationships. But it's tremendous fun and, as other reviewers have said, all of us can identify with the tensions and frustrations that exist in families, and all of us recognise that from time to time, those emotions can burst forth in ways that are sometimes cruel and sometimes simply ridiculous.

It's a superbly crafted movie and the director handles every scene with consummate skill. Even the dog, Caruso, paralysed though he is (that's part of the story) makes a flawless contribution.
