Trainspotting [1996]

Trainspotting [1996]

as someone from Edinburgh who lived and went to plenty of the places mentioned in Trainspotting i have to say read the book the book instead which has the full content and message rather than just a comic short hand for what was happening at the time. It made fashionista fools think that taking hard drugs was a nice activity and gave them kudos and brought in too many people too Edinburgh looking for that lifestyle.
I have never managed it all the way through and think it is just an alternative advert for Britain for the naively trendy or people who misguided enough to think that the pathos and dark humor wasn't there to balance the story...great cast though and on the whole well acted but an overrated footnote to late 90's Britain

Nuts In May [1976]

Nuts In May [1976]

I had never heard of this film, but I first watched it a couple of years ago and it blew me away. This is now firmly establised as one of my favourite films of all time. Whilst I know that many people will not understand the film, I now actually judge people on whether they like this film or not. I have changed my views on my own friends through watching this superb film. People who do not like this film are simpleton's in my view, and example of this is my friend Wikey. He does not like this film, and therefore I like him less as I know his brain does not have enough capacity to understand the subtle humour this film provides.

It is best to watch this film when you are slightly tipsy, and it always gets me howling with laughter. The funniest moments are:
- when Keith and Candice Marie make Ray sing with them - 'Well done Ray'!
- when keith confronts Finger about the noise coming from his tent at night
- when Keith snaps his book shut and shouts 'why don't we ask Ray'!
- when Keith does his stretches
- When keith goes mad
- and finally when the end credits go and Keith is making his way into the woods with a shovel and toilet roll.

Monte Carlo or Bust [1969]

Monte Carlo or Bust [1969]

Peter Cook and Dudley Moore are only two of the galaxy of stars who all have great parts in this classic 60's comedy about the famous car rally across Europe. Tony Curtis, Terry Thomas, Eric Sykes, Susan Hampshire and Gert Frobel all have dirty tricks up their sleeves to be first across the line as they face the hazards of the frozen North, the Alps etc. "Pete n' Dud" appear as two maniac Army officers in what is my favourite of all their performances. This film is the real story of the 60's cartoon serial "The Wacky Races" and you will recognise the Dick Dastardly character immediately as Terry Thomas (and Eric Sykes, the sneaky butler who translates brilliantly as "Mutley, The Snickering Hound" in "The Wacky Races"!) The media coverage of the race is a wonderful parody of sports presentation which would make a film in itself.

Why this film is lost to film lovers is a mystery. Perhaps the American presence wasn't big enough with so much European talent around. But, Hey! Tony Curtis gets the girl in the end so what's the problem?! It's just a great giggle from beginning to end and the pace of the film is constantly propelled by the excitement of the race itself. This is a film which the whole family will love.

The Lost Prince [2003]

The Lost Prince [2003]

This was one of the best ever BBC dramas.
It made me smile but at the end it will make you cry!
It showed some of history that you would never know about unless you were
a true historian.
Everybody played their part well.
Worth watching again and again.

Cardio Bounce

Cardio Bounce

My daughter got a rebounder for Xmas 3 years ago. I have used it much more than her doing this video. It is brilliant fun, excellent aerobic excercise and make you feel really good by the end. Only problem for the older mothers is a bit of leakage! I did find however that this improved the more I did it (perhaps training my pelivic floor??)

The 3 people on the video obviously really enjoy what they are doing and the 2 "helpers" at the back sometimes get it wrong which gives me heart.

Got Lucy Knights Gymball video for Xmas. The workout is good, but she could learn a lot from the girl that does CardioBounce.

If you have a rebounder, you need this video!!!

A Kind Of Loving [1962]

A Kind Of Loving [1962]

If your hair is just beginning to go grey at the edges, you will very likely join the ranks of those who feel nostalgic for their lost youth. This marvellous film from the very beginning of the 1960s is another example (with the even better 'Saturday Night & Sunday Morning' for example) of a Britain that has gone for ever. Although filmed in black & white, one really gets the feeling of a grim and gritty country where the austerity brought on by the war hasn't yet disappeared and where the streets are just as narrow as the ideas and opinions. It seems an age ago - steam trains, an almost empty hospital car park, young people riding on buses instead of having their own motorbike or cars. In just over 40 years, the nation's morality has been turned upside down: because of what people might say or think, a young man daren't go into a chemists' and ask a woman assistant for a packet of condoms. Unimaginable today. And as a result, as in the other film mentioned, a young woman becomes pregnant and the protagonists' lives are changed for ever. Here, there is no question of an abortion, of simply living together, of having a child out of wedlock - Vic Brown (Alan Bates) has to do the "right thing" and face the consequences of his act and marry the girl (June Ritchie). A family begins on the wrong foot and for all the wrong reasons and there is little chance that things will eventually turn out for the better, especially as the impoverished couple is forced to reside with the girl's fearsome mother, beautifully played as always by Thora Hird. Here, Vic is considered to be little more than a lodger, which makes the situation intolerable. They stay together even after the baby is lost as marriage in those days was 'a life sentence', for good or for bad. No question of just a quick divorce.

What is most striking in films such as this is not actually the way the country itself has changed physically but the way attitudes have evolved. Would today's younger generation be able to equate with this couple who seems worlds away from the present-day permissive society? Would they understand the narow-minded bigoted attitudes of this period which is only a generation away? A world where "right's right and wrong's wrong" as Vic's sister says, she who, in contrast, married happily for love at the beginning of the film. This is a world where it is alright to smoke anywhere in the house except for the bedroom. The couple finally decide to stay together, to give it a chance once away from the overbearing mother-in-law. As in SN&SM, it ends on a note of optimism for the future. One is left wondering, however, if the 'progress' over the intervening 45 years is all for the better.

CherFitness: A New Attitude [1991]

CherFitness: A New Attitude [1991]

I have used this video for years and years, before, during and after being a total gym freak and I agree with most, this is one of the best workouts all round for the home. I too am on my second video as I wore the first one out and I came on this site today to see if I could get it on DVD as no doubt in the near future we will no longer be using video players! I have also bought other video's / DVD's ranging from other step ones such as Reebok and also tae bo, Ministry of Sound etc, etc. I find that some sections on other home video's bore me but I enjoy every section of this one!

If you like step, you'll love this :)

My only complaint also is that it isn't available on DVD:)
